ADDITIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY FOR MILITARY SERVICE 

Special Extra Earnings for Military Service 

For anyone who's had active duty service prior to January 2002 and planning for retirement. In a nutshell it boils down to this:

You qualify for a higher social security payment because of your military service, for active duty any time from 1940 through 2001 (the program was done away with in January 2002). Up to $1200 per year of earnings credit credited at time of application - which can make a substantial difference in social security monthly payments upon your retirement.  

You must bring your DD-214 to the Social Security Office - and you must ask for this benefit to receive it! Soc Sec website:

This is something to put in your files for when you apply for Social Security down the road. It is NOT just for retirees, BUT anyone who has served on active duty prior to January 2002. FYI - this benefit is not automatic, you must ask for it!

If You’re A Veteran, Act Like One

The U.S. Flag Code has always stipulated that uniformed members of the armed services should salute the flag when it passes in review and that civilians should show respect by placing their hands over their hearts. But that was changed with passage of the February 2008 Defense Authorization Act (S.1877) which permits veterans in civilian clothes to salute the flag as they would have when they were serving in uniform. This includes paying respect to the U.S. flag during the playing of the National Anthem.

In the yacht clubs community, the tradition at balls has been that all officers in uniform but uncovered (not wearing hats) pay respect to the flag by placing their hands over their hearts. At openings and when covered (wearing hats) all officers have traditionally rendered a military-type salute to the flag.

At the request of CBYCA, the newly-formed Veterans Yacht Club Association (VYCA) reviewed these issues and makes the following recommendation. The VYCA decided that its members and all veterans should follow the changed code and will thus render a hand salute under all circumstances when paying respect to the flag of the United States of America. The VYCA encourages all veterans to pay respects by saluting the flag and encourages all others to pay respects as they have in the past with the traditional "hand over heart" salute when uncovered.
